Albinism is a genetic condition in which people are born without color pigment in their bodies. Albinism, which is caused by faulty genes passed down from mother and father, cannot produce melanin, which gives color to skin, eyes, hair and feathers. Albinism, which is not a disease but a genetic difference, is not only seen in humans, animals and even plants can have albinism.

So how do special plants that cannot produce chlorophyll due to genetic mutations survive?
If you look carefully at the plant species, you will notice that we have been hosting plants with variegated or pure white leaves as indoor plants for years.

Albino Monstera Delicioasa

These plants often have higher prices because they are rare.

There is a reason why albino plants are often referred to as “vampire” plants: Albino plants continue to live without producing energy, without performing the most important vital function…

Chlorophyll is vital for healthy plant life. Albino plants continue their lives without photosynthesis because they do not have chlorophyll. Although the plant appears to continue to grow, it uses the energy it cannot provide through photosynthesis from the initial energy stored in the seed. While plants with partial albinism can survive, plants that are completely albino may remain stunted/small or may completely wilt when the energy stored in the seed is depleted.

Although some scientists have been able to keep albino seedlings alive for short periods of time using special soil and treatments, it is rare to grow fully albinistic plants to mature size in a home setting.

Plant lovers who want to add a unique albino plant to their plant collection can choose specially bred variegated species or shocked ones. our fern frames with albino leaves we recommend you take a look.
